Murphy, Zitzmann Tops For RI At Brown Invite!


To say that Conor Murphy has picked it up a notch this season after a stellar freshman campaign would be an understatement to the highest degree.

The Classical sophomore, currently ranked No. 1 in the state, clocked his second straight sub 16-minute clocking for the 5K distance. Murphy's latest effort occurred on Saturday at the Brown Northeast Invitational. Competing in the Championship boys' race, Murphy finished seventh overall with a personal best of 15:38.20. His time beats his previous best of 15:51.12, set two weeks ago when he placed fourth overall at the Maine Festival of Champions.

Andrew McClure of Burrillviille placed among the top 25, taking 24th overall in 16:08.48.

Barrington's Eliot Laidlaw placed seventh overall in the Varsity Division 2 race with a 15:55.27 clocking, the second fastest time for RI at the meet.

In the girls' Championship race, Barrington's Katie Zitzmann was the top Rhode Island finisher. She was 15th overall in 18:42.45. Zitzmann's Eagles' teammate Caroline Livingston was 20th (18:52.76) and Cumberland's Grace Henson was 22nd overall (19:00.82).

Lincoln High was a strong fifth overall in the boys' Varsity Division 1 race. The Lions, who compiled 200 points, had their top five runners crack 18 minutes. Leading the way was Evan Thompson (21st, 16:52.78) and Nicholas Gaitanis (26th, 16:59.87).

Bay View took home a second-place plaque in the girls' Division 1 race. Emma Shaw was the first across the line for the Bengals, placing 13th overall in 19:40.78. Ciara Cruz was 15th in 19:49.52.

The Ocean State claimed the individual titles in both freshmen events. The Prout School's Evan Reynolds won the boys' race with a time of 13:24 for the 4K distance. Cumberland's Olivia Belt took the girls' race, breaking the tape in 15:30.
