Proud Weekend For R.I. At New Balance Nationals

We've seen a number of gutsy performances at NBNI, but one that ranks high up there is the anchor leg of Central's Austin Wolo in the boys' 4x200m relay. With his team needing to place among the top six in the semifinals on Saturday, Wolo delivered for the Knights. But he also paid a price. In the lead with a little more than 100 meters remaining, Wolo started to falter down the stretch and it was apparent something was wrong. He crossed the line to secure third in the heat and enable the Knights to advance to the finals, but dropped to the oval, holding onto his leg while grimacing in pain. It was learned that Wolo had tore a muscle in his leg during the closing stages of the race, an injury that prevented him from competing in the finals with his teammates, and will keep him off the track for at least six weeks. Central made sure Wolo's courageous effort was not wasted the next day and held on for sixth in the finals to earn All American. The Knights' Donatien Djero came close to a pair of state marks in the 60m dash and 200m with a time of 6.93 in his preliminary heat of the 60m and 21.85 in the 200m. Central's talented high-jumper Augustus Karweh leaped 6-7.
