U.S. Olympic T&F Trials: Petranoff advances to javelin finals; Huling ninth in 3K steeplchase


Former Cranston West standout Leigh Petranoff qualified for the finals of the javelin at the U.S. Track & Field Trials on Thursday.

The 27-year-old Petranoff earned one of 12 spots for the finals by finishing tenth overall with a heave of 171 feet, 9 inches. She achieved her qualifier on her last throw, beating out  2014 NCAA Division I champion Fawn Miller, who had a toss of 171-1 on her second attempt.  The finals are slated for Saturday at 4 p.m.

Petranoff, the daughter of former World record-holder and two-time U.S. Olympian Tom Petranoff, also qualified for the finals of the 2012 Olympic T&F Trials.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday night, former North Kingstown runner Dan Huling was ninth overall in 8:39.50. He was fourth in  the preliminaries on Monday with a time of 8:30.34.
