R.I. State Meet: It's Prediction Time!

Sub 60 first lap in boys' 1,500m

This could be the race of the meet with a field that includes four that have run under 3:57 this spring, including top seed and 4:06 miler Jack Salisbury of La Salle. Most of the runners in this race will have fresh legs or at least relatively fresh legs with the 4x800m at the beginning of the meet. For some, particularly the La Salle runners, this race will hold some importance as far as team scoring goes. With gusty competitors like Salisbury, his Ram teammates Matt Bouthillette and DJ Principe, and North Kingstown super freshman Sam Toolin on the line, runners that like to grind it out, we're not predicting a tactical race, rather an all-out battle that will begin once the smoke clears the starter's pistol. We're predicting the top pack  will hit the opening 400m around 59 seconds. It won't continue that way but it will be a fast race. Former Westerly great Andrew Springer's state record of 3:45 should be safe, but don't be surprised if we see a time under 3:50.
