State Meet: Top Female Athletes to Watch

Eliza Rego, La Salle Academy (1,500m, 1,000m)

Rego has finished second in state meet competition (Indoor and outdoor) five times in her career. We're guessing that streak will be broken on Saturday. The La Salle junior is the No. 1 seed in the 1,500m and the 1,000m, two events she has a great chance at winning. Rego ran a state indoor mark of 4:34.40 for the 1,500m at the Headley last-chance qualifier, a race she won by five second over teammate Sheridan Wilbur, who is seeded No. 2. Wilbur will be coming into the race after competing in the 3K, where she holds the top spot. Rego may potentially run the 4x800m relay at beginning of the meet. Whether or not she does, she'll still have the freshest legs at the start. With the excitement of the state meet, look for Rego to possibly break her own record. Remember in the outdoor season, she did break 4:30. In the 1,000m, her best of 2:59.40 is a little more than two seconds ahead of Wilbur, a second seed. Just like she did last year, Rego will also run a leg on the school's 4x400m, which is ranked No. 2 behind Hope.
