Top Boys To Watch At State Meet

Michael Potter, senior, Bishop Hendricken

The Hawks have an outside chance to pull off the upset this weekend by defeating heavily-favored La Salle. To do that, Mike will have to have his 'A' game. Last year he had his best race in state meet competition (cross country, track) by taking third overall, a placement that sparked the Hawks to their eventual state crown.  After finishing as the top Rhode Islander at the Bobby Doyle Five-Mile Summer Classic this past August, Mike stated he’s eyeing an individual title. His wish could come true on Sunday. Back in early October he was fourth in the seeded race of the Great American with a 15:46.90 clocking. He wasn’t able to compete at last week’s Class A meet due to a high fever, but he should be better for the states. With La Salle concentrating primarily on winning a state title, the race could be tactical. In other words, a time in the high 15-minute range may be enough to win. Mike’s capable of doing that. The added incentive of helping his teammates pull off the possible upset might give him that extra push during crunch time just like it did last year.
