Hawks, Sentinels take frosh state crowns

The spotlight was on the ninth-graders with the boys' and girls' freshmen state meets taking place on Monday.

At Westerly High, Bishop Hendricken earned the boys' title by defeating second-place La Salle, 108-93. The Rams were a runner-up again at the frosh states as Smithfield eked out an 85-82 decision at Toll Gate.

The Sentinels were fueled by three individual victories. In the pole vault, Ireland Judge soared to a winning height of 9 feet. Alyssa Colbert was a double-winner for Smithfield, capturing the javelin (102-04) and the discus (96-01).

Two of the state's finest young runners did not disappoint. Eliza Rego of La Salle registered two quality times by winning the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:53.4 and the 800 at 2:18.6. Barrington's Emma McMillan, the cross-country state titlist, copped the 3,000 at 10:16.0.

In the hammer, Toll Gate' s Courtney Jacobsen took gold with a distance of 129-06.

La Salle's Jack Salsbury won two events in the boys' meet, breaking the tape in the 1,500 at 4:16.1 and the 800 at 2:09.3. Bobby Colantonio of Barrington also made it to the top of the podium twice. He took the hammer with an impressive throw of 190-03 and the discus at 116-08. Narragansett's Michael Silvestri was the top sprinter, winning the 100 in 11.1 and the 200 with a 23.0 clocking.

Hendricken's Steve Olson was triumphant in the javelin with a toss of 153-07. Andrew Walters of Cumberland snared the crown in the shot put at 40-03.
