Classical Wins First-Ever RIIL Individual Indoor State Title

The Girl's Indoor State Meet was full of surprises this year. The first surprise was the return of Reese Fahys of East Greenwich. She won the 3000 in 10:16, and the cross-country state champion looks ready to be back in action fully outdoors. In that same race were Grace Doyle and Caroline Cummings both scoring points in the team battle. Classical would come out to an early lead thanks to a huge win in the 4x200 for Classical. They would also find success in the throws and sprints scoring a combined 29 points. They found most of those points in the shot put and 300 thanks to the depth and the newly implemented 8-person scoring system. Distance events also helped as Grace Doyle and Caroline Jankowich combined for 20 points with Jankowich's 4th in the 1500 and 3rd in the 1000 as well as Doyle's 4th in the 3000 and 6th in the 1500. All of this, as well as a strong 2nd place 4x400, sealed their victory as the championship did not leave Providence, but did belong to a new state champion. They previously tied La Salle during their 16 year run, but this year they retain sole possession of the title.

Another surprise was a tie for second between Moses Brown and Cranston West. I was incorrect earlier when writing Sophia Gorriaran was only in the 300 and 600 as she declared for the 1000 and 1500. She won both in dominant fashion and anchored the Moses Brown team to a huge win in the 4x400 breaking their school record and nearing the state record. Points in the 600, 4x200, and long jump helped them to come close to the title but fall short with Classical at 68 points to Moses Brown's 42. However, Cranston West also finished with 42 points. These points came from sprints, jumps, throws, and relays. Specifically, Ailani Sutherland's 24 points with runner-up finishes in the 300, 55 dash, and 4x200 meter relay. The speed and power-oriented school also placed 5th in the 4x400 to secure a tie for second.

West Warwick, aka the Raye sisters, scored all of their points. Younger sister Lisa Raye was the star though as she scored a combined 31 points between winning the 55 dash, 300, 55mh, and long jump. Her sister's 2nd in the 55 dash and 3rd in the 300 accounted for the other 11. The two sisters nearly came second in the meet, and as only a freshman and a sophomore, they will be a force to be reckoned with in years to come. La Salle placed 5th with 31 points as their streak came to a close.

The state meet never fails to disappoint, and as many end their seasons here, some will move on to New England's and nationals to improve on their PRs and achieve All-American honors.
