Rhode Island Shines At Outdoor National Meets

While New Balance was going on at Franklin Field in Pennsylvania, some made the trip to Oregon to compete at Hayward Field, the venue for the U.S. Trials and World Championships later this year.

Jacob Connolly of East Greenwich entered the mile in the third heat out of six. He would sit back in 9th for the first 800 before moving up to 7th and splitting 2:06.52 at 809. Even at 1500, he remained in 7th place, but the last 109 meters saw Connolly tear up the track. A blistering 15.251 saw him rocket from 7th to 2nd in his heat with a final time of 4:11.87. Overall, he jumped from 22nd at 1500 to 9th at the finish line. He just missed EG great Nick Ross's 4:11.49 mile from 2010. Connolly ended his season on a high note, but he was not alone.

Jake Serra of Westerly also ended his season with a huge PR of 4:20.39 in the Emerging Elite Mile. Serra ran even splits and moved from 3rd to 2nd to first on the last lap to take the win.

Two other Rhode Islanders competed in the Emerging Elite across track and field. Francine Miller of Bay View ran a new personal best of 1:01.39 in the Girls 400 for 11th. Nate Greenberg of Barrington ran 11.26 to take 22nd in the event.
