New Balance Nationals Indoor Boys' Preview: Championship Events

Weight Throw

Rhode Island athletes have consistently done well in this event at NBNI with Barrington's Adam Kelly winning a title in 2015 and fellow teammate Bobby Colantonio earning gold in 2016. We don't expect to see another champion this weekend, but the Ocean State could fare well when it comes to the podium. The overwhelming favorite for the title is Washington's Trey Knight of Ridgefield, who is the only athlete in the field to exceed 80 feet with his nation-leading 83-6.75 from the Super Throwers Indoor Series on Jan. 20 in Oregon. Lincoln's Garrett Doyle recently captured the Weightarama in Providence with a PR and nation No. 2 of 72-0.5. Jacob Furland of Classical, who defeated Doyle at the State Meet a few weeks ago, is inches from a 70-footer with his 69-9.25 effort from the states. Both rivals have a chance to snag a top-3 finish this weekend. Also look for Lincoln's Evan Grivers (67-4.75) and La Salle's Cameron Croce (67-1) for potential high placements this weekend.
