The Ocean State Cross-Country Invitational will be celebrating its 11th year this fall and once again race directors Bob and Anne Rothenberg and Charlie Breagy are expecting another large contingent of runners heading to Goddard Park for the two-day meet in late September.
The meet begins with a series of six middle school races on Friday, Sept. 22 from 3:45 to 6 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 23, the action kicks off at 8 a.m., with an open 5K Trail Race, followed by 14 high school races, which include Freshmen, Junior Varsity and Varsity events.
In the past, this race has been one of the top regional competitions in the northeast, attracting schools from throughout the northeast region and beyond, such as North Carolina and Pennsylvania. The competition has also been top notch, too. In the Championship events last year, New York's Noah Carey of Guilderland claimed the individual title with a time of 15 minutes, 30.39 seconds on the generous five-kilometer terrain. North Kingstown's Sam Toolin was second in 15:49.81. The girls' Championship race was captured by Massachusetts' Grace Connolly of Natic in 18:00.06. Taking runner-up honors was Westerly's Randi Burr in 18:28.27.
