Mount Pleasant Invitational Girls' 1,500m
This race certainly has potential to go down to the final few meters. Portsmouth's Nikki Merrill won the individual title at the Class B meet last week with her current best of 4:39.6, beating formidable foe Randi Burr of Westerly fairly convincingly. Merrill will be tested once again with La Salle's Emily Kane. The Ram junior clocked a PB of 4:40.20 to win the Classical Classic a few weeks ago and is not afraid to take the pace out hard and challenge the Patriot standout, who is unbeaten against RI competition. The meet record of 4:34.80 by recent La Salle grad Eliza Rego set last year appears out of reach, but expect a time under 4:40 in this one, we're guessing 4:37. A darkhouse in the field is Cumberland's Julia Dempsey, who more than likely gained a strong strong dose of confidence after her 20-second PR for 3,000m last week where she captured the Class A title in 10:23.4.
