Central High demonstrated its speed at Tuesday's eighth annual Rhode Island Classic.
The Knights captured the 4x200-meter and 4x400m relays. Individually, senior Austin Wolo was a winner in the 300m dash and classmate Donatien Djero was .03 from coming out on top in the 55m dash.
Central set one of three meet records with its victory in the 4x200m relay. The quartet of Jones Mallay, Dametrius O'Conner, Djero and Wolo combined for a time of 1 minute, 31.30 seconds, a clocking that ranks No. 8 in the nation and is more than a second under the old mark. The Knights' foursome of Djero, Wolo, Anthiny Vega and Charles Kolie took top honors in the 4x400m relay with a 3:30.27 effort.
Wolo, who was named MVP for the track events, also claimed gold in the 300m dash with a winning time of 36.44. Djero placed second in the 55m with a time of 6:62. He clocked 6.59 in the preliminaries, a time recorded by eventual winner, Christopher Borzor of Uniondale (NY).
In the boys' competition, the Ocean State had several other victors during the more than nine hour meet, held at Providence Career and Technical Academy field house.
Bishop Hendricken combined its efforts to take the 4x800m relay with a time of 8:24.37. Barrington was second at 8:39.53. The Eagles copped the distance medley relay with a time of 11:06.43.
Barrington's Mars Bishop pulled away from North Kingstown's Sam Toolin late in the race to break the tape in the mile. Bishop finished at 4:23.79, while Toolin was timed in 4:27.5 for second. Cumberland's Ben Drezek was third in a PB of 4:28.64.
Westerly's Matt Walker easily defended his 3K title. Walker went through the mile in 4:48 and finished at 9:11.89.
Hendricken's Matt St. Jean was a winner in the freshmen/sophomore mile with a time of 4:44.75.
Classical took both the high jump and the weight relays.
For the girls, North Kingstown's Tereza Bolibruch, the state's defending 55m hurdle champion, took that event at the RI Classic with a time of 8.58.
Westerly's Randi Burr held of La Salle's Emily Kane in the mile with a time of 5:04.88. Kane was second in 5:07.83.
East Greenwich's Laura Murphy was a runner-up in the 300m, just .004 behind winner, Bloomfield's Zaidra James. Murphy was clocked in 42.33.
