Athletes To Watch: Boys' Distance Events

DJ Principe, La Salle Academy

After the cross-country season he had this past fall, expect some great things from this Ram senior on the indoor surface. It should be a record-breaking winter for Principe, who has potential to eclipse his two-mile mark (8:59.05), his 3K record (8:26.51) and his former teammate Jack Salisbury's one-mile record (4:08.33). The La Salle standout is coming off a red-hot season on the trails where he won his third state crown, his second New England title and earned a berth to the Nike Cross Nationals by winning the Northeast Regionals in record-breaking fashion. Principe indicated after the nationals in Oregon, that he will be concentrating on the mile a little more this year. Principe has already been invited to the New Balance Grand Prix Junior Mile where he will try to repeat Salisbury's win and make it back-to-back titles for La Salle at the elite competition. Remember he did run a 4:07 at the Nike Elite Camp this past summer.  Expect Principe to dominate the distance events at the state level with potential to win at least two (possibly three) events (3,000m, 1,500m, 1,000m) at the championship meet on Feb. 18.
