Athletes To Watch: Girls' Distance Events

Randi Burr, Westerly

Burr will be going into this indoor campaign after a strong cross-country season where she finished second in the state and was fifth overall at the New England Championship. The Bulldog standout has range from the 600-meter run to the 3,000m where she has run bests of 1:41 and 10:35 (oudoor), respectively. Burr's best event, and perhaps the one she will be concentrating most on this winter, is the 1,500m. At the outdoor state meet last spring, she was a runner-up to individual champion Eliza Rego of La Salle, who is now a freshman at Harvard University. She owns a best 4:46.54. Based on last year's performances, the Westerly junior should be listed as one of the favorites in this event, along with La Salle's Emily Kane and Barrington's Katie Zitzmann, who both have done in the low 4:40 range. As indicated, the versatile Burr also has some speed in her legs and will more than likely be doubling up in either the 1,000m or 600m, two more events she can place high. Don't rule out the 3,000m, too.
