Dartmouth Invite: La Salle boys defend title; Hawks set record in 4x200m

La Salle junior Jack Salisbury earned a trip to the New Balance Grand Prix next month with his victory in the mile at Dartmouth.


La Salle Academy finished off a very successful weekend at the Dartmouth Relays by winning their second straight boys’ team title Sunday afternoon. The Rams easily defeated second-place Bishop Hendricken, 80-36.

The Hawks had one of several highlights by Rhode Islanders by setting a meet record in the 4x200-meter relay. The quartet of Lee Moses, Kwity Paye, Power Kanga and Nick Stravato combined for a time of 1 minute, 32.58 seconds.

As expected, La Salle collected a considerable amount of its points from the distance events. Junior Jack Salisbury earned a berth to next month's New Balance Grand Prix Junior Mile by capturing his specialty with a time of 4:21.32. Salisbury led a 1-4-5 finish by the Rams with sophomore D.J. Principe taking fourth (4:23.99) and senior Dan Paiva crossing the line in fifth at 4:24.38.

The Rams also dominated the two mile with junior Matt Bouthillette breaking the tape with a time of 9:27.26 (US #5). Senior Jake Grundy was third (9:30.50). Cumberland junior Sean Laverty placed fourth (9:30.71) and Hendricken senior Tim Grizzetti was fifth (9:39.98).

In the 1,000m, La Salle senior Jamie Placco had a more than three-second best with his winning time of 2:34.01. Ram senior Broderick Santilli was second in the 55m dash with a time of 6.55.

Hendricken's Moses continued his supremacy in the long jump with a first-place leap of 23 feet, 0.5 inches. 

For the second straight year, Barrington senior Adam Kelly ruled the 25-pound weight with a winning distance of 81-0.25. The Eagles also claimed the second and third positions with junior Bobby Colantonio (71-0) and senior Mike Alvernaz (PB, 65-10.5) taking those slots. Barrington also had another athlete make the finals with senior Jamie Heinl placing seventh among the field of 27 with a PB of 54-0.3.

In the girls' meet, La Salle finished second to Rush Henrietta, N.Y., 59-52.

The Rams' Sheridan Wilbur copped the two mile with a nation No. 2 of 10:52.96. Wilbur was also part of La Salle's winning 4x800m squad. The foursome of Wilbur, junior Eliza Rego, junior Audrey O'Neil and sophomore Nicole Renzi combined for a time of 9:38.63 (US #10), nearly 11-seconds faster than runner-up, Colonie, N.Y.

La Salle was third in the 4x200m (1:50.33) and fourth in the 4x400m (4:15.99).

Lily Foulkes of the Wheeler School finished second in the mile run with a PB of 5:06.33. She was just ahead of the Rams' Rego, who was third at 5:06.64. The race was won by Shannon Murdock of Exeter, N.H., who was timed in 5:04.15.

Narragansett's Makena Thomas took the 20-pound weight throw with a heave of 46-5.75.
