Rhode Island athletes earned 10 gold medals from Saturday’s R.I. Classic at the Providence Career and Technical Academy field house.

Barrington High senior Adam Kelly spurred the Eagles to a facility record of 221 feet, 8.75 inches in the weight throw relay by improving on his nation No. 1 in the 25-pound weight with a state and New England record of 82-8.75. Kelly, who eclipsed the 14-year-old record of 81-8.75 by former Hendricken star Josh McCaughey in 2000, teamed with junior Bobby Colantonio (75-2.5) and senior Mike Alvernaz (63-9.5).

La Salle Academy registered the fastest time in the country in the distance medley relay with a time of 10 minutes, 31.80 seconds. The Ram quartet consisted of junior Matt Bouthillette (3:13/1,200m), junior James Placco (:53/400m), senior Jake Grundy (2:04/800m) and sophomore D.J. Principe (4:21/mile).

Bishop Hendricken captured two relay events. The team of junior Brendan Dillon, sophomore Ethan Famiano, junior Caleb Wurster and senior Dan Medici won the 55m shuttle relay with a time of 33.21. The Hawks also placed first in the 4x800m with the foursome of senior Jared Boulanger, junior Avery Ingegneri, senior Patrick Hagerty and senior Tom Grizzetti combining for a winning time of 8:22.37.

In the girls’ 4x800m, it was the La Salle girls that brought home the hardware. Senior Sheridan Wilbur, junior Audrey O’Neill, junior Elise Papazian and junior Eliza Rego were timed in 9:47.35 (US #11).

The lone individual victory for R.I. girls occurred in the Freshmen Mile. Emily Kane, a ninth-grader from La Salle, led from gun to wire and crossed the line in 5:28.99.

The boys had four athletes earn individual honors. Westerly’s Matt Walker was a convincing victor in the freshmen mile with a fast 4:53.66 effort. In the varsity mile, La Salle junior Jack Salisbury utilized his devastating kick with half a lap remaining en route to a first-place time of 4:21.31 (US #6).

Classical junior Nate Narcisse was the only runner to break eight seconds in the 55m hurdles, winning the event in 7.88.  East Providence junior Paulo Pereira took the long jump with a leap of 21-7.25.
