Kelly, Principe Rise To Top At RITCA Invite

It looks like Adam Kelly has picked up where he left off.

The Barrington High senior and defending national champion achieved the country's No. 1 distance in the 25-pound weight at Saturday's RITCA Invitational, winning his specialty with a personal-best effort of 80 feet, 1.5 inches. Kelly's work wasn't done in the non-scoring, co-ed meet. He also earned gold in the shot put with a PB of 50-02.

La Salle sophomore D.J. Principe (8:46.45) and junior teammate Matt Bouthillette (8:46.53) ran the two fastest times in the nation in the 3,000m. Senior Jake Grundy (8:55.95) placed third.

The Eagles' Kelly was one of four double-winners at the meet, held at the Providence Career and Technical Academy field house. La Salle Academy junior Eliza Rego captured the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 27.15 seconds (US #3). She was also the first across the line in the 1,000m with her 3:03.86 clocking. Classical senior Alva Hicks was victorious in the 20-pound weight (54-3) and the shot (39-3).Cranston West senior Oceana Williams beat her rivals in the 55m (7.51) and the 300m (43.28).

Among other highlights: Coventry junior Jose Santos sizzled to a winning time of 36.49 in the 300m. La Salle junior Jack Salisbury edged Chariho Regional senior Mitch Carrier by .14 in the 1,500, breaking the tape in a fast early-season time of 4:05.57. Defending state titlist Carly Timpson of Narragansett took the high jump with a height of 5-2.
