Skippers' Craven is Duke-bound

North Kingstown middle-distance star Joe Craven will be honing his talents at Duke University next fall. Craven becomes the second R.I. athlete to sign their letter of intent with the Blue Devils. La Salle all-stater Sheridan Wilbur also has committed to the Division I program.

Craven was part of the Skippers' state-record 4x800-meter relay squad that finished third at the New Balance National Outdoor Championships last spring with a time of 7 minutes, 37.62 seconds. He ran a personal best of 1:55.48 for the foursome, whose combined time ranks No. 3 all time in the United States. Craven also helped his team win the outdoor state title by earning All-State honors on both the first-place 4x400m and 4x800m relay squads. He was also fourth in the 400m where he ran a PR time of 50.57. Last year, the N.K. runner placed second in the 1,000m and was on the winning 4x800m relay at the indoor state meet.
