Sentinels bring home title at Northern Division meet

(Cumberland's Nichole Barger won the 800-meter run in a meet record of 2:19.70)

Smithfield High relied on its depth, particularly in the field events, to win the Northern Division title on Tuesday. Alyssa Colbert and Megan Malloy each had two victories for the Sentinels, which beat runner-up Cumberland, 236-149.4.

Malloy earned her gold in the hammer with a heave of 139 feet, 9 inches and the shot put at 36-5.25. Colbert was victorious in the discus at 102-10 and the javelin with a distance of 91-04. Smithfield collected 153 points in the non-running events.

Cumberland’s Nichole Barger set a meet record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.70. The Clippers also had double-winning efforts from Meaghan Scullin (high jump, 5-3; 400m, 59.2), Madison Soullier (110m hurdles, 16.8; 300 hurdles, 50.9) and Amy Laverty (1,500m, 5:04.0; 3,000m, 10:50.6).

Woonsocket’s Quinn Marlan copped both sprints. She was timed in 12.6 in the 100-meter dash and 27.2 in the 200m.
