Kelly, Donadio earn gold at Yale; La Salle a runner-up in DMR

Barrington High junior Adam Kelly continued his dominance in the 25-pound weight throw this season, taking gold at the 32nd annual Yale Track Classic on Friday.

In the first event of the two-day meet, Kelly unleashed a meet-record heave of 74 feet, 9 inches, just eight-inches shy of his nation best of 75-5. He broke the existing mark of 73-6 by former teammate and 2013 grad Charlie Ionata at last year’s meet.

Kelly, who is competing at the East Coast Invitational on Saturday, has not gone below 70 feet all winter.

“Last year I didn’t have a throw that was under 60 feet,” he said. “I would like to do the same this year and boost it up another level.”

Rhode Island also snagged a first in the girls’ 20-pound weight with Classical senior Bianca Donadio edging junior teammate Alva Hicks with a distance of 46-11. Hicks took runner-up honors at 46-8. Finishing third was Smithfield sophomore Meagan Malloy at 43-7 and taking fourth was Classical sophomore Lysah Russell with a 42-8 effort.

La Salle Academy finished an outstanding second overall in the Championship Distance Medley Relay with a time of 10 minutes, 24.6 seconds, a clocking that ranks No. 4 nationally. St. Anthony’s of New York won the race with a time of 10:21.0. Comprising the Rams’ squad was junior Jamie Placco, junior Dan Paiva, sophomore Jack Salisbury and sophomore Matt Bouthilette.

Bishop Hendricken placed ninth in the 4x800 large school race. The Hawks' Avery Ingegneri, Jared Boulanger, Grant Gauthier and Tom Grizzetti combined for a time of 8:21.0.
