Runners to Watch: Ben Drezek, Cumberland

The cross-country season will soon be here and once again we have a plethora of talented athletes that will traverse the courses this season. The early-prognosis - and from what we heard from several coaches over the last few month - is that East Greenwich and La Salle Academy are the favorites to win this year's boys' and girls' team titles at the State Meet, scheduled for Nov. 4 at Ponaganset. Who are the top athletes that we should keep our eyes on for individually supremacy? During the next few weeks, we'll let you know who we feel are the strongest contenders this fall.

Here's our latest...

Ben Drezek, Cumberland

During the outdoor season last year, Ben proved his worth as a legitimate steeple-chaser. He established state records in the 2K steeplechase (6:23.51) at the Loucks Games and the 3K steeplechase (9:38.99) at the New Balance Nationals. But the Clipper standout also excelled in his inaugural season of cross country in 2015. He was one of the state's best on the uneven terrain, winning the Bronco Invitational and later placing sixth at the State Meet. Among the key returnees, Ben comes into the season with the fifth fastest time, his 15:40 effort at the Brown Invitational.  His best on the more challenging Ponaganset course, site of the class and state meets, is 16:02. Look for this Cumberland standout to make an impact this year.
