Weekend Preview: All Eyes on Wendy's and Great American XC

Wendy's Invitational

Wendy's is back in 2021 and the field is looking as strong as ever! Some of North Carolina's elite go head-to-head with some of the best in the southeast. With Foot Locker South being held at McAlpine this is a great opportunity for some out-of-state schools to get some reps on the course.

Wendy's Virtual Meet

Boys' Race

Matthew Fernando (Westminster, GA) comes in with the second fastest time of the bunch, a 15:25 mark from 2020. Fernando has ran 15:31 and 15:37 this season so he is definitely in the running to take the win. His team, Westminster School, may have the best chance of dethroning Mount Tabor. Noah Chen (Westminster) is looking to break 16:00 for the first time and could help be the difference maker in the team battle.

Chapel Hill has a 37 second spread in their 1-5 runners, and will use that to their advantage as they try to run the upset on Mount Tabor.

Wando, SC's Jake Liebert ran 15:24 his last race a few weeks back and has the top time coming into the event. He ran 15:24 at the Warrior XC Invitational on September 18th.

North Carolina's Jacob Laney (Porter Ridge) and Ethan Snyder (Marvin Ridge) have established themselves as two of the best in the state. This is the perfect opportunity for them to prove they are the best in the state, if not the whole south region.

Friday Night Lights champion Zach Willer and his brother Nicholas Willer (Stuart Cramer) are both strong candidates to leave Charlotte with the individual title. The Lake Norman duo of Gavin Sweeney and Griffin Horner are two to watch as well, as they could be in for big races.

Girls' Race

Two of the south's best teams make the trip to Charlotte for the Wendy's Invitational. J.L. Mann from South Carolina and Marist from Georgia are lining up against our own Marvin Ridge, Watauga, Hoggard, Chapel Hill, and West Forsyth

Marist sophomore Ruby Little was 2nd at the adidas XC Challenge and comes into the event with the fastest personal best, 17:49. Right on her tail is Apex senior Sarah Mitchell, who is looking to run a personal best for the first time this season. Her 2020 best of 17:59 is only 10 seconds off Little.

East Chapel Hill's Anna Ivanisevic is looking to dip under 18:00 for the first time along with Hoggard's Molly Parker.

Lake Norman duo of Madeline Stolberg and Maddie Huecker could both find themselves at the front of the race when they come around the pond for the final time.

Abby Weber (Chapel Hill) comes in with the 9th best time, but I am expecting a big personal best out of her this weekend.

J.L. Mann's Kennedy Roush and Madison Roush have each ran 18:16 in the careers which puts them right in the mix to take the win.

Myers Park sophomore Mary Bonner Dalton is making her season debut in the race as well, she could very well be at the front of the race when it is all said and done.

Page freshman Allie Kinlaw is looking to build off her 18:30 mark from adidas XC and move up the all-time freshman rankings!
