Westerly High
First Place, Rhode Island State Championship
In recent years, only a few teams were predicted to contend for the girls' state crown. This past spring, it was different. At the June 3 State Meet, there was at least five schools that had a legitimate chance to take home the hardware at Brown University Stadium.
And it was Westerly that was the last one standing at the end.
The Bulldogs managed just one victory in the six-plus hour meet, but their depth proved crucial in the outcome as they captured the team title with an 11-point victory over runner-up Portsmouth. It was their first crown since winning five straight from 2002-06
Among the key contributors: The Bulldogs earned their lone win from their 4x100-meter squad, a foursome that included Leila Cox, Emma Santee, Sydney Federico and Helena Hall-Thomsen. There was also junior Randi Burr, who scored 16 points individually by placing second in the 800m and third in the 1,500m. Santee also added big points by placing third in both the 100m and 200m.
