There's no question that Central High is among the contenders for the boys' team title at the State Meet on June 3.
There's also no question that the Knights will be relying heavily on their sprinters to try and earn the school its first-ever championship.
But valuable points can also be attained inside the oval, particularly at the high jump where the Knights have a great possibility to pick up 10 big points from Gus Karwah. The Central senior solidified his spot as the odds on favorite for the individual crown at Saturday's Class A Championship with a near seven-footer in the vertical leap. Karwah earned gold with a three-inch PR of 6 feet, 10 inches!
The Knights, who finished second to team champion Bishop Hendricken in the meet, collected more than 30 points from Donatien Djero. The talented senior captured the 100m (10.40), 200m (21.60) and the 400m (49.0). If that wasn't enough, Djero also lent his footspeed for the Knights' winning 4x400m relay squad.
The Hawks, who won their unprecedented 40th consecutive Class A title, were once again fueled by their dept, including a 1-2 finish from Ethan Famiano and Joseph Rivera Santos in the 110m hurdles. The two teammates ran neck-and-neck in the race and were timed in an identical and state-leading time of 14.6.
In the 800m, La Salle's DJ Principe established a new meet record with a winning time of 1:54.60. Principe was already in cruise control by the time he reached his opening 400m where he was timed at just under 57 seconds.
North Kingstown won the girls' title. The Rams' Emily Kane collected 26 points, winning the 1,500m and the 800m crowns and finishing third overall in the 3,000m. Kane, who registered times of 4:48.0 for the 1,500 and 2:18.8 for the 800m, is prepping for the State Meet where she could again be competing in all three events.
Woonsocket's Quinn Harlan took top honors in the 100m dash.
In the girls' 100m hurdles, North Kingstown's Tereza Bolibruch held off Toll Gate's Casey Gannon to win with a time of 14.8 to Gannon's 15.1 effort. Gannon came back later and set a new meet record in the 300m hurdles where she blazed to a MR of 45.4.
North Kingstown's Kaitlin Brayman tied a MR in the pole vault with a winning height of 10-0.
Cumberland's Julia Dempsey ran a more than 20-second best to capture the 3,000m with a first-place time of 10:23.6.
MIleSplit RI will have more on the Class Championships coming soon.
