In last week's poll, East Greenwich's Laura Murphy, who ran a sub 59-second 400m to place second at the East Coast Invitational, collected the most votes with 178. Central's Donatien Djero, a double winner at East Coast, had the second most with 171. How about this past weekend? We had quite a few outstanding performances by our RI athletes. What performance did you consider was the best of the best? Below we compiled a list of six that we felt stood out among the rest. Vote for the one you think should be No. 1 Voting ends on Saturday at midnight.
Here's a quick recap of our nominees:
- On Saturday, La Salle's DJ Principe nearly became the tenth high school runner to break four minutes with a new state record of 4:00.97 at the New Balance Games, an effort that earned him a third-place finish against some top collegiate and professional runners.
- Woonsocket's weight-thrower continue to excel inside the circle. This past weekend, led by senior Jared Briere, the Villa Noivans swept the top three placements at the Yale Track Classic and New Balance Games.
- Central dominated the sprint events and for added measure the high jump too at the Yale Track Classic. Donatien Djero won the 55m dash, Austin Wolo was first in the 400m dash, Augustus Karweh took the high jump and the Knights also claimed gold in the 4x200m and 4x400m relays.
- Ponaganset's Gianna Rao inched closer to the 60-foot mark in the weight throw with a winning toss of 59-6.25 at the Yale Track Classic.
- La Salle's Grace Connolly ran the country's eighth fastest time for 3,000m by capturing the championship race at the Yale Track Classic in 10:01.32.
- La Salle's DMR squad clocked a nation No. 6 in the Distance Medley Relay by placing fourth at the Yale Track Classic. The foursome included Connolly, Emily Kane, Alyson Walsh and Sydney Boulanger.
