League Meets' Wrap-Up, Week 1

Week 1 of the league dual meets is in the books.

After four days of boys' and girls' meets at the PCTA fieldhouse, several athletes have already produced top-level performances for the indoor track & field season.

Here's a sampling.

Five runners have clocked bettered than 10:40 in the 3,000-meter run for girls with Westerly junior Randi Burr (10:15.24) and La Salle Academy senior Grace Connolly (10:17.77) at the 1-2 spots. In her first year on the indoor surface, cross-country state champion Ellie Lawler of South Kingstown ran 10:25.17.

Emily Kane of La Salle  was timed in a fast, early-season time of 3:03.19 in the 1,000m. Portsmouth's Elizabeth Sullivan was second at 3:04.92. Kane also dipped under 4:50 for the 1,500m with a strong time of 4:49.86.

Ponaganset's All-American weight-thrower Gianna Rao unleashed a near best of 53-4.25. Pilgrim's Chelsea Yang also exceeded 50 feet with a 50-6.25 effort.

In the boys' meets, La Salle's DJ Principe kicked off his track season with an impressive 4:03.98 for 1,500m. Barrington's Mars Bishop also was under 4:10 with a time of 4:08.80.

The Rams' Joseph Dos Reis, only a sophomore, had a big-time PR in the 1,000m with a time of 2:38.95.

Central's sprinters demonstrated their mettle in the sprinting events. Austin Wolo, who won the 400m title at the outdoor championships in June, sizzled the 300m in 36.25. Teammate Donatien Djero clocked 6.57 for 55m.
