Principe Takes National 5K Title

A little more than an hour after teammate Jack Salisbury captured the adidas Dream Mile in Sommerville, Mass., La Salle Academy junior DJ Principe made some noise about 750 miles away.

Principe ran away with the 5,000-meter title at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Championship in North Carolina Friday night. The Ram standout bolted to a 4:30 opening mile and cruised to a new state record of 14:37.09, breaking his own R.I. mark of 14:42,9, set at last year's NBNO meet. Principe was more than five seconds ahead of runner-up Mason Coppi of Dana Hills (CA), who was timed in 14:42.38.

South Kingstown sophomore Ellie Lawler was seventh in her heat and 20th overall in the girls' 5K with a solid 17:40.86 clocking.
