Lady Sentinels, Hawks Are Your Champions!!!

Almost following a similar script to last year where it scored heavily in the field events and had a few surprises along the way, Smithfield High captured its second straight state title Saturday afternoon at Brown University Stadium. The Sentinels held off a feisty North Kingstown squad, 62-60.

A victory was not assured for Smithfield until the final event of the day, the 4x400m relay. Smithfield finished fourth in the race, just a half a second faster than the Skippers, who won the unseeded heat. Alyssa Colbert captured two events for the Sentinels with wins in the discus and javelin.

In the boys' meet, Bishop Hendricken's outstanding depth enabled it to win its first team crown since 2010 and 23rd overall in its storied history. The Hawks had two victories, winning the meet-opening 4x100m and Jon Celico taking the pole vault. The Hawks beat defending state champion La Salle Academy by a score of 96-81. The Rams' Jack Salisbury concluded his outstanding high school career on R.I. soil by winning his third straight 1,500m crown and second consecutive 800m title. He also ran the opening leg for the school's record-setting 4x800m relay squad.

Among some of the other highlights:

Classical's May Stern was a triple winner, breaking the tape in the 100m, 200m and 400m.

Central won the meet-ending 4x400m relay and also had individual victories from Donatien Djero in the 100m and 200m and Austin Wolo in the 400m. The Knights swept the top three positions in the 200m.

Barrington's Bobby Colantonio and Toll Gate's Courtney Jacobsen won their respective boys' and girls' hammer events.

Cumberland's Meaghan Scullin was a double winner, taking the high jump and 300m hurdles.

South Kingstown's Anthony Shepard copped the long and triple jumps.

La Salle's Eliza Rego placed first in the 1,500m and 800m and was also fourth in the 3,000m.
