More than 40 athletes from the Ocean State are heading to the Big Apple this weekend to compete in the often-competitive New York Relays.
The two-day meet, which will be live streamed on MileSplit, will be held Friday and Saturday at Icahn Stadium on Randall Island. By the time the competition is finished, Rhode Islanders have a good chance at bringing home a few gold medals.
The biggest contingent from R.I. will be its hammer throwers with 27 making the three-hour trip, including the nation's No. 1 throwers for boys and girls, Barrington's Bobby Colantonio (243 feet, 6 inches) and Toll Gate's Courtney Jacobsen (185-11). Other athletes who rank among the top 10 inside the circle are Classical's Lysah Russell (US #3) and Barrington's Annika Kelly (US #9) for girls and Woonsocket's Jared Briere (US #4) and Dilyn Cote (US #7) for boys.
La Salle Academy runners will populate the Invitational Mile races. The All-American trio of Jack Salisbury, Matt Bouthillette and DJ Principe all have a chance at breaking 4:10 or at least coming close with the right kind of race in the boys' race (1:05 p.m. on Saturday). There's also potential of a Ram sweep in the event. The girls' race (12:55 p.m. on Saturday) will feature three quarters of La Salle's winning 4xMile Relay from the New Balance Nationals this past March - Eliza Rego, Karina Tavares and Emily Kane. With a 4:53 best, Rego has potential to place among the top contenders. The No. 1 seed hails from the host state, Rush Henrietta senior Sammy Watson, a 4:47 miler with 2:03 800m speed.
Two-time indoor 55m hurdle state champion and defending 110m HH outdoor titlist, Nathan Narcisse of Classical, will be competing in two events this weekend. He's entered in the 110m HH and the 400m IH.
