Fast-improving Berg takes care of business

Mount St. Charles' talented junior, who was 14th at the state meet in his first year of high school running last year, is off to a fine start this fall. He was third to La Salle Academy's national-ranked duo of D.J. Principe and Matt Bouthillette at the season-opening Injury Fund Carnival.

On Monday afternoon, during one of the Interscholastic League's 11 scheduled dual meets, Berg posted an impressive win against Cumberland and Smithfield, winning the individual title with a time of 16 minutes, 18 seconds for the five-kilometer course at Deerfield Park. The unbeaten Clippers, who swept the meet to improve to 5-0 for the season, had a 2-3 finish from Ben Drezek and Sean Laverty.


In the girls' race, three-time all-stater Amy Laverty claimed the individual title by coasting to a 19:41 clocking. Laverty and her teammates swept by the Sentinels and Mounties to improve to 5-0 in the league.
