Clippers, Shamrocks fastest at K of C Relays

Under typical windy conditions at Mount Pleasant's Conley Stadium on Saturday, Cumberland and Bishop Feehan posted the fastest times in the respective boys' and girls' races at the 47th annual Knights of Columbus Four-Mile Relays.

The Clippers' quartet of James Haupt, Sean Laverty, David Agudelo and Abdul Kaba set a school record of 18 minutes, 54.10 seconds to capture the Division I race. Finishing second was Bishop Hendricken in 19:07.30.

In the girls' race, Feehan coasted to its Div. I crown with a time of 22:23.90. That foursome consisted of Abigail Long, Meghan Carmody, Elizabeth Hannon and Jackie Cutillo. La Salle Academy, which split up its members from last month's national championship squad into three different teams, placed second (22;51.30), third (22:52.90) and fifth (22:56.30) in the race. Barrington, anchored by cross-country state titlist Emma McMillan, was fourth at 22:55.10.

Other division winners in the meet included East Greenwich (19:42.30) and Barrington (20:15.20) in the Div. II and Div. III boys' race, respectively. Smithfield (23:44.0) copped the girls' Div. Ii race.

The meet produced the three best throws in the country in the boys' hammer. Barrington senior Adam Kelly, who won his second straight indoor national title in the 25-pound weight this past winter, had a more than 13-foot best with a heave of 236 feet, 7 inches. He unleashed his toss shortly after junior teammate Bobby Colantonio broke his previous best by two-plus feet with a distance of 235-11, good for second place. Taking third was Moses Brown senior Owen Russell with a PB of 222-03.

Classical senior Alva Hicks took the girls' hammer with a 164-11 effort, Placing second was Toll Gate's Courtney Jacobsen with a toss of 156-04.

The freshmen mile races were captured by St. John Prep's Tristian Shelgren (4:49.30) and Smithfield's Una Treanor (5:45.70).
