Day 2 of the New Balance Nationals had a few heartbreakers for Rhode Islanders on Saturday.
La Salle Academy fell one placement short of achieving All-American status in the boys’ 4x1 mile relay, taking seventh overall with a time of 17 minutes, 45.51 seconds. Comprising the quartet with their respective mile times was sophomore Matt Bouthillette (4:28), junior James Placco (4:32), junior Dan Paiva (4:23) and sophomore Jack Salisbury (4:22).
The race proved doubly frustrating for R.I., as the top three teams broke the national record of 17:20.2 by Chariho Regional in 2012. Christian Brothers Academy of N.J., won with a time of 17:07.17. Bushop Hendricken was 20th overall with a time of 18:33.07.
In the girls’ 4x800, the Rams placed ninth overall with a season best of 9:18.14. Senior Alicia DeCastro ran an opening leg of 2:19.98. Senior Caroline Falvey was timed in 2:21.66, sophomore Karina Tavares had a 2:21.22 split and sophomore Eliza Rego anchored with a 2:15.28 clocking.
Hope junior Quashira McIntosh finished second in her heat of the 200m preliminaries with a time of 24.92, missing the finals by .44. Garrett Scanlon, a senior from East Greenwich, was 20th overall in the Emerging Elite mile run with a 4:27.63. Moses Brown senior Amos Cariati clocked a PB of 50.64 in the EE 400m.
