Skippers' Hazel fastest frosh; Rams win team crown

Once again, La Salle Academy has one of the best girls’ varsity teams in the state this year.

As evident by their performance on Monday, the Rams also have some pretty talented ninth-graders.
 
With four of its runners among the first nine placements, La Salle easily captured the Freshmen State Meet, defeating runner-up South Kingstown, 33-73, at Burrillville Middle School. North Kingstown was third with 78 points.
 
Jamie Hazel of N.K., took individual honors on the 2.5 mile layout, holding off La Salle’s Michelle Renzi with a time of 16 minutes, 26.30 seconds. Renzi was second at 16:28.36. Smithfield’s Sydney Bagus was third in the field of 116 with a time of 16:34.34.
 
Comprising the winning team for La Salle was Renzi, Kelly Giffault (fifth, 16:56.46), Sydney Decesare (eighth, 17:14.81), Alyson Walsh (ninth, 17:20.45) and Leigh Giffault (15th, 18:07.98).
 
South Kingstown’s Abigail Cobb was fourth at 16:36.56 and teammate Kylie Blechman was sixth in 17:09.01. Bay View’s Claire Hanlon (seventh, 17:09.54) and North Kingstown’s Lila Suranarayan (tenth, 17:21.53) rounded out the top 10.
