Twilight X-C Relays approaching fast

There have been a few coaches that have asked questions concerning the inaugural MileSplit RI Twilight X-C Relays, which will be held on Friday night, Sept. 13, at Cumberland High’s Tucker Field.

The most common question is how many relays teams can be entered per school? There is no real limit on three-person teams, however, only four teams can be entered in the varsity 3x2 mile relay and the remaining members of your squad can be entered in the novice 3x1 mile. For example, Toll Gate will be sending 27 of its girls to the meet. That means head coach Norm Bouthillier can enter 12 of his girls (or four 3-person teams) in the 3x2 mile and the remaining 15 (or five 3-person teams) in the 3x1 mile. The cost, per gender, is $15 for each three-person team or $100 for seven or more three-person teams.

Another question is what classifies a team as a large school and a small school. The best way to do this is, once the entries are submitted, rank the teams by enrollment and then split it in half. That decision still has not been confirmed, but that appears to be the way that we will do it.

Other things to take note: There will be T-shirts on sale throughout the meet. The front of the shirt will include the above logo. There will also be a concession stand and music will be played throughout the event.

The meet will start at 4:30 p.m., beginning with the novice races followed by the varsity races. Click here for schedule. Tentatively, the novice races will be run every 30 minutes and the varsity races will be every 45 minutes. There will be course tours from 3 to 4:15 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded to the first-place teams in each division, thanks to the generosity of Rhode Runner Sports. We would also like to recognize M-F Athletic, which will provide race numbers and batons for all the teams. Timing will be provided by Dave Wilbur of Wilbur Race Systems. The timing will be cumulative. Coaches will be responsible for separate splits of their athletes.

Spectators are asked to park their vehicles at the parking lot adjacent to the football field. Buses should drop teams off at the tennis courts and park near the high school on Farm Drive. If walking from the high school, athletes, coaches and spectators are asked to use the pedestrian bridge. The high school is located at 2600 Mendon Road.

Again, as indicated in an e-mail sent earlier this week, MileSplit RI will be at the Injury Fund Cross-Country Carnival at Burrillville Middle School this Saturday. Anyone who wishes to submit payment with entry form is encouraged to do so. All other entries should be mailed to Chuck Martin, 126 Bowker Street, Norwell, MA  02061. Remember, all checks payable to milesplitmass. The entry deadline is Sept.11.

Any other questions concerning the meet, feel free to call Steve at 475-5046 or 480-2401 or send an e-mail to ri.milesplit@gmail.com. Special thanks to Cumberland head coach Tom Kenwood and Cumberland recreation director Mike Crawley for the use of the facility and for their dedicated services to this meet. Also, thanks to J.H. Lynch & Sons in Cumberland for their donations of portable lights. Coaches and athletes, we appreciate all your support with this exciting, new event and to MileSplit RI. We look forward to seeing you at Tucker Field on Sept. 13.
