McIntosh, Cooper, Ionata earn victories at N.Y. Relays


NEW YORK – Three Rhode Islanders earned gold at the annual New York Relays at Randall Island’s Icahn Stadium this weekend.

On Saturday, Hope High sophomore Quashira McIntosh blazed to victory in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.33 seconds. McIntosh also placed second in the 200, just .05 behind Middle College's Kadeaa Baird with her time of 24.89.

During Friday's action of the two-day meet, Barrington senior Charlie Ionata continued his unbeaten streak in the hammer throw by capturing the event with a toss of 228 feet, 4 inches. The Eagles’ Adam Kelly was second at 207-5 and Central’s Carlos Mangum finished third at 200-11.

The girls’ hammer also saw a familiar face at the top of the podium with Classical senior Marthaline Cooper unleashing a winning throw of 153-4. Teammate Alva Hicks was third with a distance of 145-7. Hicks was also sixth in the discus at 107-9.

R.I. record-holder Julianna Poretlli of Barrington was fifth in the steeplechase with a 7:44.66 clocking. 

Classical junior Maddy Berkson was a third-place finisher in the 3,000-meter run. She was timed in 10:09.86. 

McIntosh clocked a personal best of 12.12 in the 100 in her preliminary heat.
