One Last Look At The State Meet

It seems we always talk about the winners when it comes to championship meets. But it's not that we are ignoring all the rest. Most of the time it's due to time restraints and the fact that if we spend anymore time than the countless hours we already did covering this wonderful sport our very-understanding but tired significant other could be letting us know in a quite painful way just what size shoe she wears as we get booted out into the pavement. Although there were several, the one athlete that we feel definitely deserves notice is Westerly junior Randi Burr. Burr has been one of our top middle-to-long distance runners the last two years. In most other states, she could be a state champion in events ranging from the 600m to the 3K. Unfortunately Burr competes in a state that has its fair share of national-caliber athletes. At the cross-country state championships in the fall, she was second to two-time champion and Foot Locker All-American Ellie Lawler. Saturday it was more of the same. Burr made the 1,500m race honest by pushing the pace most of the way. She was passed with less than a lap remaining by Portsmouth's Nikki Merrill, who went on to win her first of three races for the day with a time of 4:42.76. Burr held on and placed second overall with an indoor best of 4:43.26. The Bulldog standout also got fourth in the 1,000m. But in an appropriate finish to her day, she anchored  her school's 4x400m relay team to a victory in the meet's final event. The smile on her face as she crossed the finish line said it all.
