DJ's Blog: Wrap-up of Nike Elite Camp

La Salle Academy standout DJ Principe was in Eugene, Oregon this past week at the Nike Elite Camp. He was among 18 of the best runners in the country, who will be entering their senior year in high school this fall. While at the five-day camp at the University of Oregon, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that began on Wednesday, DJ graciously agreed to blog about his experience. Below is his final blog, wrapping up a memorable week that included a mile PR of 4:07.66 inside Hayward Field.

Elite Camp was truly something to remember.

The day before competing in Saturday's exhibition mile race at Hayward Field gave us an opportunity to take advantage of some of the things the Olympic Trials had to offer. We were able to be the first to go through the "Lane 8" experience, an area designed to show the evolution of Nike, and to demonstrate its amazing attention to the Elite Athlete. We were given the opportunity to meet and talk to amazing pro coaches such as Coach (Jerry) Schumacher. The night concluded with an ice bath in some kiddie pools. Race day alone was an unbelievable experience. Just walking into the athlete area and being surrounded by pro athletes and Olympians was a gratifying experience. After some light warm-ups and drills we were sent down underneath the stadium until race time. Just stepping out onto the track and feeling the energy of the crowd was something I had never felt before, and probably something only present at a place like Hayward Field where fans are enthusiastic and educated about running.

The actual race was amazing. To be surrounded by 9 other guys who wanted to work together towards PRs was unbelievable, and made having a fantastic race easier than normal. After the race we were able to sit down and talk to some unbelievably accomplished athletes such as Hassan Mead and Bernard Lagat. They were so enthusiastic about talking to us and gave some great insight into how they have become so successful. The trip ended with a fun night of bowling and arcade games as a whole group.

With Elite Camp coming to a close I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity I had this past week, and want to thank all those that made this whole experience possible. I had the experience of a lifetime with some great guys. And want to thank Simone Bairu and Pat Werhane for selecting me to be apart of this.
