After posting a hand-held 400-meter time of 55.2 at the Cumberland Invitational earlier this month, Classical's May Stern hoped to better the fully-automatic state record time of 55.44 set last year by Hope High's Quashira "Q" Mc Intosh. Stern, a senior headed for Brown in the fall, got her wish on Saturday at the Mt. Pleasant Invitational at Conley Stadium.
With automatic timing in place on the track (necessary for state-record consideration at that distance), Stern plunged into a hot wind and came through impressively with a new record time of 55.09. "My goal was not to hold back in the last 200 [meters],'' said an elated Stern, adding, "Heat is a love-hate relationship with me.''
Also yesterday, No. 4-U.S. in the 9-pound (4-kilo) hammer Courtney Jacobsen of Toll Gate unloaded the ball a winning 175-8 (53.54 meters). La Salle senior Kelsey Coughlin cleared 9-6 2.89) in a tie for first with Smithfield's Ireland Judge. In the 1500, it was La Salle's Eliza Rego clocking 4:34.8 to capture the 1500. Portsmouth freshman Elizabeth Sullivan won the 3000 in 10:57.5.
