Hendricken, La Salle take JV state crowns

Just two days after sweeping their respective titles at the freshmen meet, Hendricken and La Salle Academy did the same Wednesday at the JV state championships. It didn't come easy for both squads with the Hawks squeaking by Central, 68-64, and the Rams edging North Kingstown, 54-48.

Freshman Chukwuma Onyejose was the lone Hawk victor, taking the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.83 seconds.

Central sophomore Anthony Vega captured the 300m dash with a time of 37.79. He was also on the first-place 4x400m relay that was clocked in 3:42.67.The Knights also had an impressive win from sophomore Adrien Matos, who took the 25-pound weight with a heave of 53-0.5.

Classical freshman Jehlani Gallaway cleared 6 feet to win the high jump. He was also the runner-up in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.66.

In the girls' meet, La Salle never made it to the victory stand but had key placements in the 3,000m and the 4x400m relay en route to its title. The 3K was won by Bryana Mullin of Pilgrim, who crossed the line in 12:04.94. Finishing second and third was the La Salle tandem of Emily Wilson (12:09.82) and Sydney DeCesare (12:09.77). The Rams' relay squad was clocked in 4:34.60 for second overall.

Mount Pleasant captured the two sprint events with sophomore Julissa Carmana winning the 55m dash (7.70) and sophomore Abigail Lambert first in the 300m (44.89).
