Classical High sophomore Keiran Hadley and Sam Somera, a senior at Barrington High, were Varsity race winners on Monday at the annual Columbus Day cross country event, held at Roger Williams Park. Hadley ran the hilly 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 59 seconds. In the boys’ Varsity run, Somera went 15:36 for the gold.
Hadley’s win was another high moment for Classical cross-country coach Deb Doyle, whose Purple squad finished the dual meet season at 7-2 in the Suburban Division. As such, Classical will make its first team trip to the State Championships in 15 years.
“She’s very determined,’’ Doyle said of Hadley, who finished 12 seconds ahead of the second-place runner: Shayne Cousineau, of Cranston High School East.”She’s been training hard.’’
“I didn’t plan on winning,’’ said Hadley, one of her team’s captains this season,’ “it just happened. I got out quickly. I found the hills challenging,’’ said Hadley, who swims during the winter season, and runs outdoor track in the spring.
The boys’ race was a a battle between Somera and Classical’s Joe Murphy. Murphy, a junior, clocked 15:38. They were a close 1-2 with about a half mile to go.
“I’ve been a bit off this year, getting back to my P-R’’ said Somera, one of the Eagle captains. “We’ve got a good team this year.’’
Course Note: The annual Brown University Invitational will be held next Saturday, 18 October, at Goddard Park, Warwick.
