Two meet records were set on Sunday at the annual Sons of Italy Championship II, held at Mount Pleasant's Conley Stadium.
Classical High's Alva Hicks, who will be a senior this fall, broke her own record in the 3 kilogram hammer with a heave of 178 feet, 5 inches. She smashed her own mark of 168-08, set last year. Hicks was also a winner in the 4 kg. hammer with a distance of 160-08.
A new record was also set in the women's collegiate hammer with former Barrington High standout Robyn McFetters, a senior at the University of Maine in Orono, breaking her 2012 mark by just over two feet with a winning toss of 177-11.
Barrington's Bobby Colantonio was just seven inches from eclipsing his record in the 16-pound hammer, set just a few weeks ago in the first installment of the Sons of Italy meet. He won on Sunday with a distance of 192-2. Colantonio also edged Eagle teammate Adam Kelly in the 12-pound hammer with a 217-07 effort. Kelly was second at 216-06 and teammate Mike Alvernaz was third with a heave of 188-05. Kelly easily took the 5 kg. hammer with a 221-07 best.
The meet also featured a javelin throw. In that event, Jamie Heinl of Barrington won with a near PB of 174-0.
