Mazzulla, Hawks dominate boys' frosh states

Justin Mazzulla snared two individual triumphs, paving the way for a dominating performance by Bishop Hendricken at the Freshmen State Meet. The Hawks nearly doubled the point total of their nearest competitor, defeating second-place West Warwick, 121-25-67.75, at Conley Stadium.

Mazzulla earned his medals by winning the 400-meter dash with a fast time of 53.8 seconds. He was also victorious in the triple jump with a leap of 40-05.75.

East Greenwich's Jackson Cronin was the first to cross the line in the 3,000m, taking gold with a 9:35.50 clocking. In a mild upset, Barrington's Mars Bishop out-distanced La Salle's D.J. Principe in the 1,500m with a time of 4:13.20. Principe crossed the line in second at 4:14.80. The La Salle ninth-grader didn't go home empty handed, though. He came back later and won the 800m at 2:08.50.

West Warwick's Ivan Goretoy collected 28 points in the field events. He had first-place tosses of 133-9 in the javelin and 40-11 in the shot put. He was also second in the hammer with a distance of 162-1. Woonsocket's Jared Briere had the best effort in the hammer with a heave of 178-9.
