Tierney, Rego earn weekly honors

It’s that time again. With a new season beginning in cross country, MileSplit RI also begins its weekly M-F Athletic male and female Athlete of the Week feature.

Based on their impressive victories at the season-opening Injury Fund Cross-Country Carnival on Saturday, this week’s recipients are Bishop Hendricken senior Colin Tierney and La Salle Academy sophomore Eliza Rego.

Tierney, a multiple all-stater, is being labeled as one of the favorites to snare individual honors at the state meet in November. At the Injury Fund meet, the Hawk standout demonstrated his furious kick down the stretch by edging teammate Mike Potter by a mere tenth of a second in the Gray Division race  with a time of 15 minutes, 35 seconds, the fastest clocking of day.

The Rams’ Rego, who was making her debut on the trails after an outstanding freshman season, was the best among girls. She had convincing wire-to-wire victory in the Sullivan Division race, averaging slightly less than six-minute pace with her time of 18:27. Rego’s effort overshadowed a stellar run by Classical senior Maddy Berkson, who was an easy victor in the Roy Division at 18:33.
