Top 5 Moments At USATF Junior Nationals, Day 2

5. Matthew Maton Still Has It

The long-awaited match-up between the year's two sub-four minute milers in Matthew Maton and Grant Fisher did not materialize as Maton dropped the 1500m to focus on the Friday morning 5k. The choice was a prudent one, as the Oregon recruit won in 14:47.10 over Oklahoma State freshman Cerake Geberkidane (14:52.87).

"I wasn't as nervous as I usually am for a race because the past couple races this season, usually I've been going for times and just to break records," he said. "This one, I was just going for top two, didn't really care what the time was, finally got to race something and not just hang on for dear life. I was more excited to race again because it's been a long time."

The race marked Maton's first since his historic 3:59.38 on May 8. He suffered nagging Achilles soreness from racing in a new pair of spikes that night and dropped many of the major post-season high school events, including the adidas Dream Mile and Brooks PR Invitational 2 Mile.

He chose the 5k over 1500m because he did not feel as race sharp, though he still managed to throw down a 60-second closing quarter for the win.

As for the 1500m finals on Saturday, he picked Oregon freshman Blake Haney for the win.

"Gotta go with my teammate," he said.
