Three R.I. schools were on the track oval Thursday during Day 1 of the Penn Relays Carnival.
Barrington High was a fifth-place finisher in the Small School 4x800-meter relay. The Eagles combined for a time of 9 minutes, 30.57 seconds. Comprising the squad was Mary Coogan (2:28.7), Julianna Portelli (2:24.6), Megan Verner-Crist (2:19.7) and Abby Livingston (2:17.6).
La Salle Academy had two its relay squads competing inside Franklin Field on the first day. The Rams were tenth in their heat of the Large School 4x400 with the quartet of Veronica Hardy (1:00.37), senior Caroline Falvey (1:04.64), Jessica Apajee (1:03.74 and senior Amanda Joyal (1:01.11).
La Salle was also tenth in the Championship of America Distance Medley with a time of 12:14.93. Sophomore Karina Tavares led off the Rams’ team with a 3:48.93 for her 1,200 leg. Joyal was timed in 1:01.32 for the 400 split, junior Sheridan Wilbur clocked an 800 leg of 2:19.98 and sophomore Eliza Rego anchored with a 5:04.70 mile.
Hope was the fastest among 13 schools in its 4x400 relay with a time of 4:11.02. Junior Quashira McIntosh anchored the foursome with a fast 59.67 leg. The remaining squad was comprised of Isis Hack (1:04.68), Chevell Burgess (1:03.26) and Whitney Jackson (1:03.41).
Burgess, Hack, Destiny-Hughes Barnes and McIntosh finished 53rd overall among 327 schools in the Small School 4x100 with a 50.45 clocking.
