Highlights

  • Edward Cheserek set his fourth course record of the young season; blasting the field in 14:34.6.  Full story

  • Pembroke won their third consecutive Championship Division race by beating New York state power St. Anthony's by only two points (131 to 133). The Titans got another huge race from Wes Gallagher who finished in 3rd (15:22.7), but it was sophomore Christian Stafford who posted the race of his young career by finishing 10th in 15:39. St. Anthony's did a fantastic job of pack running on a course that is notorious for pulling teams apart.  They didn't have anybody in the top 20, but they posted a 14 second 1-5 gap starting at 16:13 to give Pembroke a real challenge. Brookline (MA) finished 3rd (154), and Chairo (RI) finished 4th (163).

  • Four girls posted sub 18 minute performances in the girls Championship Division as Kelsey Margey of Friends Academy ran away from the field in the final 1000 meters and collected an eleven second win over Rachel Paul of Sachem East.  Paul's performance sparked a scoring cluster that put 4 Sachem East runners in the top 16 and propelled them to a 7 point win over New York state rival Northport.  Alexis Panisse (17:46), Catarina Rocha (17:52), and Molly Keating (18:00) rounded out the top five.

  • Joel Hubbard, Wes Gallagher, and Chernet Sisay provided the most exciting race of the day as the three Massachusetts stars barreled down the home stretch separated by a fraction of a second.  Hubbard used his impressive foot speed to edge the pair in the last 75 meters, and Gallagher slipped past Sisay with less than 30 meters to go.  Hubbard finished second overall in 15:21.4, followed by Gallagher (15:22.7) and Sisay (15:23.0).  Mike Marsella of Chariho finished just off the group at 15:25.5 to round-out the top five.

  • Lexington looks like a dangerous team for the future.  They put three boys in the top 10 of the freshman race to win the event with 90 points.  Warwick Valley was second with 124 points.

  • St. Anthony's was on a mission to post the lowest score of the day, but they had some competition from their own team.  Their freshman girls won that team title with 41 points, but their JV boys posted a perfect 15 later in the day.  Shoreham-Wading River had the lowest varsity score of the day, winning the varsity boys Division 1 race with 53 points.  They were led by John Lee who won the event in 16:03.

  • Talia and Tiana Guevara of Miller Place High School, New York, broke away from the field and cruised to a 1-2 finish in the Varsity Girls Division 1 race.  Talia got the win with a time of 18:19, and Tiana finished second in 18:36.  Hanover edged Robbinsville for the team title by just two points, 98 to 100.

  • Ward Melville teammates Caroline O'Hea and Juliana Marcucci went 1-2 in the Varsity Girls Division 2 race.  O'Hea got the win in a very swift 18:08, while Marcucci finished second in 18:47.  Ward Mellville would hold off Whitman-Hanson for the team title, 70 to 102. Whitman-Hanson's team time of 97:31 would have been third in the Championship Division.

  • Zach Ganshirt of Walpole opened up a lead he created mid-race to cement a 15:44 win in the Varsity Boys Division 2 race.  Teammate Justin Connolly would finish 3rd in 16:08, but it was Northport who won the team title behind the performances of James Dickinson who finished 7th in 16:19, and freshman Mikey Brannigan who finished 8th in 16:19.
