Sometimes, being No. 2 isn't all that bad.
On Saturday, two of the country's top track and field talents, Sophia Gorriaran and Shawnti Jackson, recorded the two-fastest performances at 1,000 and 300 meters in high school history, clocking respective times of 2:39.83 and 36.73 at the Dr. Sander Invitational inside the Armory in New York City.
For Jackson, who was competing at the 300m distance for the second time in two weeks, she was just a hair off of her national record performance of 36.63, which she accomplished on Jan. 15 at The VA Showcase.
The South Granville (NC) senior and Arkansas signee now owns the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 all-time fastest performances at the distance. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the former national record-holder, is the second-fastest at the distance, but owns the third-fastest performance all-time.
Jackson claimed the win across an invitational field in 36.73 seconds.
Gorriaran, meanwhile, was aiming for a new high school national record in the 1,000m. She got awful close.
The Moses Brown (RI) star, still uncommitted at this point, was roughly 0.4 seconds shy of breaking Juliette Whittaker's all-time best of 2:39.41, which came a year ago at the Ocean Breeze Elite Invitational.
Gorriaran finished fourth in a women's invitational field featuring Ajee Wilson, Sage Hurta-Klecker, Charlene Lipsey and others.
The Rhode Islander clocked a time of 2:39.83, which marked a four-second improvement from her best of 2:43.52 in 2022. The time was also 16 seconds faster than her debut at the distance on Dec. 19.
