What Are The Events To Watch At States?

Remember last year when Woonsocket dominated the boys' event by sweeping the top three placements at the State Meet? Well, now it's sort of Lincoln's turn. The Lions have potential to snare the top two or at least two of the top three this weekend. The favorite is the Lions' Garrett Doyle, who has been all about consistency this season.  In a half dozen meets this winter, he has exceeded 68 feet, including his best of 71 feet, achieved recently at the Headley-Sweeney Elite Meet.  He has won nearly every meet he has competed in this year. His only losses to RI competition came to Classical's Jacob Furland (67-11 best) at the RITCA Invitational in early December and Lion teammate Evan Grivers (67-4.75 best) at the Class B Championships a few weeks ago. Grivers gives Lincoln a chance to go 1-2 in this event and Furland, obviously, is the athlete that can stand in the Lions' way. But you also can't ignore La Salle's Cameron Croce (67-8) and Hendricken's Ryan Morel (66-4), who will be looking to gain some high points to help their teams in a quest for a title.

In the girls' event, Ponaganset's Gianna Rao is the heavy favorite to make it two in a row in the circle. She has wiped away the added personal pressure of breaking the state record, etching her name in the books with her winning throw and nation No. 1 of 63-2 from the class championships.
