Big Day For Locals At Rhode Island Classic


The host state made quite the impact at the annual Rhode Island Classic on Thursday with more than a dozen athletes and relay teams making it to the top of the podium.

The boys' 800-meter race saw an Ocean State sweep with Rhode Islanders taking the top three positions. Classical's Conor Murphy overtook front-running Jack Perrault of North Kingstown with less than a 100m remaining to take the individual title with a time of 1 minutes, 57.61 seconds. Perrault finished second at 1:58.71, while East Greenwich's Cebastian Gentil took third in 2:00.21. 

The Lincoln boys posted a sweep of the shot and weight throw relays. The Lions established a meet and facility record of 143 feet, 4 inches in the shot and went 173-8 for the weight. Lincoln was also second in the weight at 150-1.25. 

Bishop Hendricken struck gold in four events, capturing the 4x200m (1:34.95), 4x800m (8:29.65), distance medley (10:59.54) and the freshmen-sophomore sprint medley (1:54.27) relays. 


Central Falls' Leonardo DaVeiga, one of our state's top sprinters, broke the tape in the 55m dash. DaViega was timed in 6.68. 

The Westerly girls proved victorious in the 4x400m relay, combining for a time of 4:10.33. La Salle's underclassmen placed first in the freshmen-sophomore sprint medley relay, combining for a time of 4:41.78.

North Kingstown's Tereza Bolibruch defended her crown in the 55m hurdles. She clocked a season best of 8.46 in her preliminary heat and 8.54 in the finals. 

Barrington broke the meet record in the girls' weight throw relay with a distance of 142-4.5.
